- Abstract
-
The Three Parks Savanna Fire-effects Network was established in 1994 with the primary aim of training management staff and assisting with the development of adaptive approaches to conservation-based fire management in regional savanna systems. The full program assesses fire regimes and their impacts on plant and vertebrate biodiversity components. The program comprises two complementary elements - mapping of fire histories based upon interpretation of satellite imagery, and assessment of vegetation and faunal components at a large series of permanent monitoring plots located across respective parks. The vegetation data comprises quantitative assessment of all species in three major strata within 800 square metre plots. Faunal assessments are undertaken in the immediate vicinity of respective plots. The occurrence of fire is assessed bi-annually on-ground and satellite derived fire mapping is conducted three times a year. A full inventory of vegetation is undertaken every five years. Terrestrial vertebrates are monitored systematically but on an irregular and less frequent basis. This dataset comprises on-ground assessment of fire occurrence and severity conducted at 132 plots located in Kakadu National Park. Fire occurrence is recorded based on on-ground plot visits, and from aerial ground-truthing assessments of the park’s satellite-based fire mapping programme. Fire severity scores (ordinal values 1–3) are assessed from field photographs. Fire occurrence and severity is assessed in three seasonal periods: early dry season (e), late dry season (L) and wet season (w) for each year. *Note: Plots are located within a National Park and physical access to the plots is restricted. **Note: This package used to be called "Monitoring the impacts of fire regimes on vegetation in northern Australia: Plot based fire severity monitoring data, Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory Australia, 1994–2011", but was relabelled for consistency.

Since 2012 this project has been part of the Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTERN). This work was supported by the Australian Government’s Terrestrial Ecosystems Research Network (www.tern.org.au) – an Australian research infrastructure facility established under the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy and Education Infrastructure Fund–Super Science Initiative through the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education. This project has also received funding from: Parks Australia, NT Parks & Wildlife Service, Tropical Savannas CRC, and from 2010-2013 - Darwin Centre for Bushfires Research (Charles Darwin University).

Plot set-up
133 Plots were established early in 1995 (wet season 1994) in Kakadu National Park. (One plot is no longer visited).
The plots themselves were established for the purposes of (1) examining the impacts of fire on vegetation in all major habitat conditions: and (2) involving park staff and Aboriginal traditional owners in all aspects of this monitoring, to refine and maintain their skills and to provide direct feedback of consequences of their management actions.
• The over-all Plot size is 40 x 20 metre. The plot is permanently located by a central metal star picket and GPS waypoint. Plots relocated by helicopter have a round large white lid on top to assist sighting the plot from air.
• A permanent photo picket with number plate is placed 10 metres inside the plot parallel with the plot sides.
• The corners and inner transects are marked by metal droppers.
Nb: some plots are not strictly 40 metres due to plot landscape constraints. Refer to Plot_details table for actual plot area.

Method Step 2- Description

Record of fire occurrence
Fire occurrence is recorded based on on-ground plot visits, and from aerial ground-truthing assessments of each park’s satellite-based fire mapping programme.
An assessment is made as to whether the plot was unburnt, patchily burnt (ground cover at least 20% unburnt), or burnt, in three seasonal periods as follows: Wet season (w) - from onset of rains (typically November) until their cessation (typically March - April); Early dry season (e) - from end of wet season until end of July; Late dry season (L) - from August until start of rains.
Note: Photo records lost for 20 plots from 1994-1999. Given loss of photos fire severity has not been scored. The data contains a record of fire occurrence only for these plots during this time period.
Method Step 3- Description
-
Ground-based photos
Photos are programmed to be recorded bi-annually but in reality often only annually, via on-ground visits by ranger staff.
Method Step 4- Description
-
Fire severity score
Fire severity is scored for each recorded fire event from plot photos.
Plot photos are scored by a member of the research team and fire managers from the park.
Two seasonal photos per plot in any 1 year are not always available. However, in nearly all instances it is possible to confidently attribute fires to (1) season, given recourse to comprehensive plot records; and (2) severity class, by close examination of differences between foliage condition and vegetation structure in photo temporal sequences.
Note: This method may not detect all fires of very low severity or high patchiness occurring especially in wet or early dry season periods given rapid post-fire regrowth under high soil moisture conditions.
Fire severity is recorded in the following categories:
• 1 = Low
• 2 = Moderate
• 3 = High
Note: Photo records lost for 20 plots from 1994-1999. Given loss of photos fire severity has not been scored. The data contains a record of fire occurrence only for these plots during this time period.
