- Abstract
-
This data package comprises data that were used to produce the graph and conclusions found in figure 7.56 on page 263 of Lindenmayer et. al 2014, Biodiversity and Environmental Change: Monitoring Challenges and Directions. These data show the spread of Cinnamon Water Mould (Phytophthera cinnamomi) across 5 transects in Freycinet National Park, Tasmania. The transects sample different methods of treatment that are designed to alieviate the spread of the disease. A synopsis of related data packages which have been collected as part of the Upland Heath Swamps Plot Network’s full program is provided at http://www.ltern.org.au/index.php/ltern-plot-networks/upland-heath-swamps.

These data were curated and published with strategic funds from a TERN initiative to publish long term data packages from the book Lindenmayer et al. 2014 Biodiversity and Environmental Change: Monitoring, Challenges and Direction. Since 2012 the Upland Heath Swamps Plot Network has been part of the Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTERN). This work was supported by the Australian Government’s Terrestrial Ecosystems Research Network (www.tern.org.au) – an Australian research infrastructure project established under the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy and Education Infrastructure Fund–Super Science Initiative through the (now) Department of Education and Training.

Method Step 1
- Description
-
Plot setup
Five Belt transects (C, 1, 2, 3, 4) were established comprising 10 continguous 2 x 2 m plots aligned in a west to east direction and marked with short star pickets in corners, 300m east of Middletone Creek dam in Freycinet National Park, Tasmania.
- Instrument
-
- 20 x star pickets
Method Step 2- Description
-
Treatment protocol for transects
Management treatment Transect C — No treatment, transect located upslope of initial Phytophthora cinnamomi infection initially recorded at site in spring 1994
Management treatment Transect 1 — Sprayed with 0.3% phosphonate in canola oil emollient in October and December 1995 , transect located downslope of initial Phytophthora cinnamomi infection initially recorded at site in spring 1994
Management treatment Transect 2 — Sprayed with 0.3% phosphonate in canola oil emollient in October and December 1995 , transect located downslope of initial Phytophthora cinnamomi infection initially recorded at site in spring 1994
Management treatment Transect 3 — No treatment, transect located downslope of initial Phytophthora cinnamomi infection initially recorded at site in spring 1994
Management treatment Transect 4 — No treatment, transect located downslope of initial Phytophthora cinnamomi infection initially recorded at site in spring 1994
Method Step 3- Description
-
Floristic sampling protocol
All vascular plant species were recorded within 1 x 1 m quadrats located in the middle of each 2 x 2 m plot, Quadrats were surveyed in years 1996, 1998 (transects C and 4 only), 2000 and 2012
Method Step 4- Description
-
Data summation
A frequency estimate was calculated for each species in each transect by dividing the number of presence records by the total number of quadrats searched (10)
Method Step 5- Description
-
Analysis protocol
Bray-Curtis dissimilarity values were calculated between all pairwise combinations of observations (each transect at each survey time). A multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) ordination was calculated in two dimensions from 10 random starts. Stress of best configuration was 0.16.
- Sampling
-
- Study Extent Description
-
Transects 1, 2 and 3 were not sampled in 1998, only 6 quadrats were surveyed in Transect 4
